  1. I had been studing English in the college, but it was not serious until I got to university and finally I realized speaking English was important to my academic and professional lives. I think it difficult when you decided dominate all the language structures. If your ambitions is read texts or speak once in a while, it is easier. I really agree with Fernando because I don’t feel myself confident when I try to speak another language. I haven’t live on another country yet and I didn’t speak all the time.

  2. Dear Ligia, I know it's not easy to master a foreign language, but I can see that you're really taking your time and making an effort to be a proficient speaker of the language. So, do you think that you can only be proficient in a second language if you live in another country? Don't you think that even though you haven't lived abroad you are still doing pretty good in English?

  3. I have been studing English for 4 years, but during this period I stoped sometimes. I think if you study hard in a English School in Brazil, you will be able to speak and write in English.

  4. José, that´s great that you have this perspective. It means that you truly believe that your effort here in Brazil will be worth it. Why have you quit studying English for certain periods? Do you feel that besides going abroad and studying in an English school there are other effective ways to practice your English?

  5. I started to learn English in the college, but I started to feel that isn't enough for someone who wants to speak great English. In college we learn more how to write, the grammatical rules. So because of that I went to Thomas Jefferson and get my diploma in 2005. Even that I don't think so confidant when I have to write something in English or speak. I agree if Fernando when he said that you learned more when you lived in the country that speaks the language, because there you have to speak all time in their language and the only way to communicate with other people is speaking their language. So when you were there or you learn or you learn.
Finally, I need to say that I believed that we can learn English here in Brazil, but I think that living abroad our proficiency can get better.

  6. Carla, I have to quit studying English for certain periods,... because in that time I hadn't found Casa Thomas Jefferson. Some times I have to receive some foreign people. That's another way to practise English.

  7. Dear Mayra,

I agree with you that by living for some time in an English speaking country, you become a more fluent speaker. However, I can tell you that I know people who have never been abroad and have just a wonderful English. Certainly being in a foreign country forces you to communicate for basic needs you have, so it´s a wonderful motivation to push you into perfecting your language. Not the only way, but it helps :-)

Dear José Alexandre, I´m glad you had found Thomas and now you´re really investing your time into advancing your English. By being with foreigners who generally don´t speak a word in Portuguese, it´s for sure an effective way of practicing your English.

Now, my question to both of you is: if you don´t have the chance to travel abroad or be in touch with English speakers, how can you keep practicing it outside the classroom?

  9. Dear Mayra, that´s true! The strategies you mentioned are just some that could be used to keep learning English. Also, I feel you, in this course, are all taking that step further. Once our online class is over, you can keep practicing by using the resources we´ve been sharing and the strategies to keep practicing online. There are so many possibilities now for online practice and interaction that the classroom walls have literally been torn down.
